Y4 Dorset Field Trip

Year 4 set out for Dorset in the middle of the May half term holiday.  First stop was Helen Browning’s organic farm in Wiltshire where we learnt about pig farming from Clive the farm manager, before enjoying a delicious lunch in the farm’s very own pub.  That evening after dinner at the Field Study Centre just outside Swanage, the children took part in a fossil workshop and learnt about the formation of Lulworth Cove.  The next day they set out to learn more about these coastal features first hand, including sketching Durdle Door on the beach.  They also gathered data about ‘honey-pot tourism’ in Lulworth by interviewing members of the public which they did so well that they were rewarded with an ice-cream. That evening we enjoyed the thrills of watching the Champions League final on the big screen in the hall.  Poor weather on the Sunday made the visits to both Maiden and Corfe Castles rather atmospheric and it was easy to imagine how hard life might have been for their inhabitants in the past. All too soon it was time to leave Dorset and start making our way back to school, but first there was a trip to the Ancient Farm on Butser Hill in Hampshire where we spun wool and made chalk pictures.
