Y6 Bayer

Back

Year 6 went to the Bayer lab, they did lots of wonderful experiments like putting our own DNA into a pot, but before I explain how they did that I need to tell you what they learnt.

The children learnt some other cool stuff like how DNA is made from A T C G’s that connect to each other and how DNA is our biogenetical code (the stuff that makes us who we are) but sometimes that code can mutate creating some unusual stuff in the human body.

At the lab our students built DNA using plastic model pieces to make the double helix shape connecting the ATC&Gs.  They then did an experiment where if you had a mutation in your taste buds you couldn't taste some types of flavours, Camden had a mutation where he couldn't taste a certain flavour (that being cabbages).

Now on to the experiment you've been wating for! Putting singular pieces of DNA into a bottle: First they chewed their cheeks and then spat our saliva (that had cheek cells in it) into a vessel where they then put ethanol in the mixture to break down the fatty cell walls. The children then separated the DNA and put in into containers so they could go home with their DNA in a bottle! It was super interesting, and a great time was had by all!
